以舊車換新車前：核對未清貸款是否被加進新合約

Before a trade-in: check whether the old loan shortfall enters the new contract
When the remaining vehicle loan exceeds the car’s value, the shortfall is negative equity. The FTC cautions that a dealer’s promise to pay off an old loan does not necessarily mean it absorbs the shortfall: the amount may enter the new loan or reduce the down payment.
Before signing, separate the trade-in valuation, loan payoff, new vehicle price, down payment and new amount financed. Ask how the difference is handled and put oral promises in writing. A lower monthly payment alone does not explain the transaction’s full cost.
This is a general FTC transaction checklist, not a personal recommendation to borrow or replace a car. Questions about advertising or finance documents can be directed through the FTC’s reporting route or the relevant state attorney general.
