The FTC cautions that a dealer’s promise to pay off an old loan does not necessarily mean it absorbs the shortfall: the amount may enter the new loan or reduce the down payment. Before signing, separate the trade-in valuation, loan payoff, new vehicle price, down payment and new amount financed. Ask how the difference is handled and put oral promises in writing.
