A stolen catalytic converter in California: replacement and protection must remain compliant
After catalytic-converter theft, do not choose a replacement solely by size or price. California BAR directs owners to a licensed Smog Check station and requires an original-equipment part or a CARB-approved aftermarket converter with an Executive Order number meeting the vehicle's exact requirements.
Protective plates, shields, clamps and similar devices must not damage the converter or obscure required identification. BAR says they should not be welded or attached directly to the converter itself. Incorrect installation can cause a smog-check failure. Etching a VIN or plate number may help identification but cannot guarantee theft prevention.
If a suitable part is unavailable or backordered, ask the manufacturer or Smog Check Referee for help rather than installing an unsuitable substitute. Whether stolen parts are insured depends on the policy and insurer. BAR's Consumer Assistance Program does not pay to replace a stolen catalytic converter. This guide endorses no product and approves no insurance claim, cost or repair result.
