Disputing a Texas home-claim estimate: add evidence before checking appraisal terms and costs
If a homeowner or renter disagrees with the insurer’s final damage estimate, TDI advises explaining what was missed and providing evidence such as a contractor’s repair estimate. If disagreement remains, check whether the policy provides appraisal and the deadline for requesting it.
Each side hires an appraiser and they select an umpire. You pay your appraiser and half the umpire’s expenses. The loss-valuation decision can be binding; appraisal is neither a free complaint process nor a resolution of every coverage dispute. TDI’s consumer help line, 800-252-3439, can explain complaint routes. TWIA has separate procedures, so general homeowners-policy steps should not simply be transferred to a TWIA claim.
