New York DRA notices: an assessment separate from the original traffic fine
A New York DMV Driver Responsibility Assessment notice should be checked for its payment date and minimum amount. DRA is a three-year assessment triggered by certain traffic offenses or point totals, separate from the original traffic fine, penalties and surcharges.
Six or more points within 18 months can trigger an assessment; specified alcohol, drug-related and chemical-test-refusal cases also qualify. Holding a license from another jurisdiction does not by itself exempt someone. Use DMV’s record and statement to establish the actual amount due.
DMV requires at least the minimum payment by the deadline to avoid suspension of the license, learner permit or driving privileges.
