Preparing for California mountain driving: give snowplows room and check your equipment
Before driving to higher elevations in California, plan for vehicle preparation and possible delays, not just the destination's forecast. Caltrans recommends checking tires, wipers and defrosting equipment, carrying suitable traction devices, and packing water, food, warm supplies and charging equipment.
The official page links to CaltransVideo's Don't Crowd the Plow, an instructional video about giving snow-removal equipment room to work. It is not a live road report. Follow signs and personnel at control points, and do not assume four-wheel drive removes the need to carry traction devices. Consult the vehicle manufacturer's instructions about fitting them.
Call the Caltrans road-information line at 800-427-7623 before departure and check again as conditions change. An older video or suggested online route does not authorize travel through a closure. This is an evergreen preparation checklist, not a claim that any mountain road is open today.
