Hmongstory Legacy and Fresno State’s digital collection: reading Hmong historical photographs in context
The Galen Beery digital exhibit developed by Hmongstory Legacy with Fresno State Library lets Hmong American families, students and other readers explore historical context through personal stories and photographs. Hmongstory’s March 12, 2024 introduction describes material documenting Beery’s experiences in Laos from 1969 to 1972. The university announced the partnership in November 2023, so this should not be presented as a newly established database today.
The current exhibit homepage has sections including Meet Galen, IVS + USAID, Life in War and Sam Thong, alongside a gallery of photographs. Start with the biography, then choose a place or theme and note each photograph’s title and context. When discussing it with relatives, distinguish the archival record from a family member’s own memories. One collector’s experience does not represent every Hmong family’s history.
