California newborn hearing screening: arrange follow-up after an initial non-pass
California’s Newborn Hearing Screening Program offers screening to newborns regardless of insurance type. Babies who do not pass the hospital screen are referred for further testing after discharge. An initial non-pass is not itself a diagnosis of permanent hearing loss; follow the clinical team’s arrangements for additional evaluation.
Keep the discharge screening result and referral, and confirm the follow-up location and timing. If screening was missed at birth, ask the child’s primary-care provider about referral to a certified outpatient screening service. The official page links Hearing Coordination Centers that follow infants needing further services. Confirm appointments and charges with the receiving facility.
