New York IDP: participation does not automatically restore a license
An alcohol- or drug-related driving conviction can suspend or revoke New York driving privileges. The Impaired Driver Program is different from an ordinary point-reduction course. Eligible participants may apply for conditional privileges, but enrollment itself is not authorization to start driving again.
Read the court and DMV notices and enroll in person through the designated office. The program includes seven weekly classroom sessions totaling sixteen hours. If formal assessment or treatment is required, those requirements must also be completed. Attendance alone does not establish completion. Participation or convictions within the previous five years affect eligibility; even court-ordered attendance may not qualify someone for a conditional license.
DMV enrollment and program charges are separate, with possible additional assessment or re-entry costs. Missed classes, incomplete required treatment or unpaid fees can cause removal and loss of conditional privileges.
