California CARS Act checklist: total price, optional extras and cancellation conditions
California DMV's dedicated CARS Act page identifies protections applying from October 1, 2026, to covered dealer transactions. Save the advertisement and first written quotation for a particular vehicle, and compare the total price and finance terms rather than only the monthly payment.
Add-ons such as warranties, GAP products and theft protection must be clearly identified in writing as optional before signing. Covered used vehicles valued at fifty thousand dollars or less have a three-day cancellation right, including weekends. Mileage, condition, return requirements and possible restocking charges still matter. Obtain the deadline and return procedure instead of treating the right as a free trial of any vehicle.
The page lists wholesale, fleet and other exceptions; it does not establish a cooling-off period for every new-car purchase. Use DMV's complaint route for disclosure or pricing concerns, or call 800-777-0133 for a form. This reference uses the dedicated new-law page, not the older paid two-day option, and makes no individual legal determination.
