Exploring West Balinese bamboo music with Gamelan Sekar Jaya
Gamelan Sekar Jaya offers Balinese music and dance learning in Berkeley. Its fall 2026 introduction to jegog, the bamboo music of West Bali, is led by Pak Gede Oka and covers playing techniques and pieces from the ensemble's repertoire. Ask whether the class fits your experience before registering.
The listed Wednesdays are October 21 and 28, and November 4, 11 and 18, from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. The class directory gives 3023 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley. Sliding-scale charges are $15–30 per class or $75–150 for the series. Free participation applies to GSJ contributing members, not everyone.
The page welcomes drop-ins, but confirm places, instrument arrangements and entry requirements. People needing financial assistance can ask education@gsj.org about work exchange without assuming a waiver. The organization's separate dance-class listing and detail page give inconsistent dates; this guide does not select one of those timetables on the reader's behalf.
