Comparing pet insurance: exclusions, waiting periods and reimbursement
A pet-insurance comparison should start with the exclusions, not just the monthly price. California's consumer questions cover pre-existing conditions, hereditary or congenital conditions and waiting periods. If an animal has already received treatment, ask the insurer how the actual policy applies instead of assuming a new contract will pay for that problem.
Next, compare deductibles, coinsurance and annual or lifetime benefit limits. Ask whether reimbursement uses the veterinarian's actual bill, a fixed fee schedule or a usual-and-customary calculation. A covered treatment can still leave the owner paying a difference.
Read renewal and premium-adjustment provisions, including what may happen after a claim. Keep written answers alongside the complete policy. This is more useful than relying on a headline reimbursement percentage. The checklist does not endorse an insurer or promise payment for an individual veterinary service.
