Understanding Medicare choices: California HICAP offers free individual counseling

HICAP provides free, confidential help understanding Medicare and related insurance issues in California. The Department of Aging describes individual counseling by trained advisers on Medicare’s different parts, prescription coverage, shared costs, eligibility questions and appeals. Some long-term-care insurance questions are also within its services.
Counseling is available to people aged sixty-five or over who qualify for Medicare, younger people who qualify because of disability, and those approaching eligibility. This does not mean everybody of any age already has Medicare. Community education events, however, are available to people of all ages.
Find a local HICAP office through the official county directory or call 1-800-434-0222. Bringing the coverage questions and notices you want explained can help focus the appointment; counseling itself does not enroll you in a particular plan. No original publication date is stated.
