Buying and maintaining a car: check unrepaired safety recalls
Practical guide, not breaking news. Location: United States.
NHTSA's official recall page offers vehicle-specific checks using a VIN or licence-plate information. The VIN can usually be found on registration documents. Before buying a used car, match the identifier to the vehicle and review the results.
A result showing no unrepaired recalls is not a complete vehicle-condition certificate. Some newly announced recalls, older records and completed repairs may not appear. Check with the manufacturer when clarification is needed.
