PBS evening roundup: Virginia charges, New York carriage vote and court developments
PBS’s October 22 evening roundup reported that Virginia state Senator Louise Lucas faced federal charges including drug trafficking and money laundering. She left a Norfolk courthouse that afternoon and said in a statement that day that she would not back down. Lucas and six other defendants were charged; the allegations remain to be proved in court and are not convictions.
New York City Council approved a bill that day to end Central Park horse-drawn carriage rides by 2028 and require the mayor to plan assistance for more than 150 current drivers seeking other work. Their union said it would challenge the bill. Separately, a federal judge in Florida ordered Trump to give a deposition by December 11 in his defamation lawsuit against the BBC, or face possible dismissal of the case.
PBS cited US and Ukrainian officials saying that Starshield service used by Ukraine’s military was operating normally that day. The program also reviewed overnight Russian attacks, Arizona storms that began the previous day, and European protests. At the US market close, the Dow rose about 11 points, the Nasdaq fell more than 2.5%, and the S&P 500 also declined. Actor Tom Skerritt’s family said he had died of natural causes on Wednesday, aged 93.
