PBS examines immigration waves and the recurring backlash in U.S. history
In a new PBS report for Crossroads: America at 250, Judy Woodruff visits immigration-history sites in New York and speaks with sociologist Nancy Foner about changes in U.S. immigration policy. The report connects successive arrivals, restrictions on entry and newcomers’ experiences.
Foner argues that immigrants have helped shape American society while repeatedly facing hostility and doubts about their ability to integrate. The segment offers historical context for current debate; it does not announce a new law or provide guidance for individual immigration cases.
