Sacramento State University Library

Sacramento State’s Southeast Asian collection: exploring family history through objects and photographs

Sacramento State University Library’s Southeast Asia Community Resource Center Collection documents Southeast Asian refugee family experiences, including Hmong, Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, Laotian, Cambodian, Karen and Mien communities. The library describes more than 6,000 books, journals, newspapers and artifacts in the overall collection, providing a starting point for families researching earlier generations’ lives and culture.

The collection was donated to the university library in 2006. A 2021 project digitized more than 200 artifacts, including crafts, toys, musical instruments, clothing, jewelry and photographs. The total of more than 6,000 holdings does not mean that everything is displayed online. Follow “View Digitized Images From the Collection” from the official introduction to the digital platform and read the individual records for context. The platform requires JavaScript; this review did not test every image.

The library’s culturally aware cataloging statement explains its use of the spelling “HMong” in some descriptions and its intention to use communities’ own words and languages. When reading, families can record an object’s name, language and period alongside family memories while preserving differences between experiences. For omissions, errors or suggested corrections in descriptions, the designated contact is lib-scua@csus.edu. Check the individual record’s terms before reusing an archival image.
