California vehicle lien-sale notices: check your interest, charges and response deadline
In California, an unpaid vehicle repair, towing or storage provider holding the vehicle may use the lien-sale process to recover charges. DMV separates procedures for vehicles worth $4,000 or less and those worth more, using current market value. This is not a shortcut for anyone to acquire an abandoned vehicle.
Check the plate, VIN, charges and your recorded interest, and read the notice’s response deadline immediately. A seller who submitted a release-of-liability notice may still receive correspondence if the buyer has not completed the transfer. Buyers missing lien-sale documents should first request copies from the seller. Contact DMV’s Lien Sale Unit at 916-657-7617 for procedural questions.
