A breakdown in Texas: keep the official Motorists Helpline handy
Texas DPS lists the Motorists Helpline, 1-800-525-5555, for motorists whose vehicle is disabled or who are stranded beside the road. Save it before traveling and be ready to describe the highway, nearby exit or mile marker.
DPS advises staying calm, moving as far from the traveled roadway as safely possible and using warning flashers. Do not step into traffic to inspect the vehicle; follow on-scene safety conditions and responders' directions.
A separate travel-information number, 1-800-452-9292, provides trip and road-condition assistance. The helpline listing does not promise free towing or a particular arrival time. Contact emergency services for injuries or immediate danger.
