California’s proficiency program: age or grade is only part of eligibility
California’s Proficiency Program replaces CHSPE and uses the language-arts and mathematics portions of HiSET. Applicants must meet age or grade conditions and remain subject to California compulsory-education rules. It is not a general high-school-equivalency option for every adult.
The official routes include being at least 16, completing one year of tenth grade, or completing tenth grade by the current semester’s end, alongside the other requirements. A passing certificate has the legal effect of a California high-school diploma. Students may remain in school; leaving involves parental or guardian permission and applicable rules. Discuss the next steps with a school counsellor before registering.
