UC Master Gardener training: plan for volunteering as well as classes
UC Master Gardener trains volunteers to share gardening knowledge with their communities. The official interest form and local UC Cooperative Extension program provide recruitment starting points; previous gardening experience is not the only consideration.
The statewide overview describes at least fifty hours of training in topics such as soil, irrigation, propagation and plant problems. Certification carries a service commitment: at least fifty volunteer hours in the first year, twenty-five annually afterward, plus twelve hours of annual continuing education beginning in year two. Ask the local program about the next intake, fees and class format before committing to both study and service.
