Adult seat-belt fit: check the shoulder and lap sections
This guide concerns adult passengers. NHTSA recommends placing the shoulder belt across the middle of the chest and the lap belt low across the hips, away from the stomach. Never tuck the shoulder belt under an arm or behind the back. If the belt does not fit, ask the manufacturer about adjustments or an appropriate extender.
Wear a belt in front and rear seats, including taxis. Settle into the seat and check its fit before the trip. Air bags do not replace seat belts. Children need restraints selected separately for their age, size and applicable seat requirements.
Location: United States. Checked: October 3, 2026 (US Pacific time). Evergreen guide; the source does not provide an original publication date.
Photo context: A real 2012 seat-belt-buckling photo; not an NHTSA image or an assessment of the finished belt fit.
