California gift-card balances under fifteen dollars: check the card type
California Civil Code 1749.5 currently permits redemption of a qualifying gift certificate's cash value when it is under fifteen dollars. That threshold applies from April 1, 2026. Under fifteen is not fifteen or less, and it does not require repayment of the original purchase price of every higher-value card.
Identify the card and how it was obtained. The statutory definition includes electronic gift cards, but qualifying cards usable across unrelated merchants can fall outside the same provisions. Free promotional or reward certificates and certain donated charitable cards carrying the specified disclaimer may also have exceptions. Do not treat every stored balance alike.
Keep the balance display, terms and purchase information and direct a specific request to the issuing merchant. Cash includes currency or a check; specified electronic methods require both parties' agreement. Never post a card number or PIN in forum comments. This reference guide determines no individual card dispute and endorses no resale or refund platform.
