Using Austin’s Burmese, Karen and other language cards to request interpretation
Austin’s iSpeak language access cards help residents explain that they need interpretation when communicating with service staff. The official list includes Burmese, Hakha Chin, Karen, Karenni, Lao, Nepali and other languages. These are not interchangeable choices; select the language the person understands best.
Cards are free to download and print, and a PDF or screenshot can also be saved on a phone. Austin Public Library locations offer free wallet cards; the city says librarians can help print a language that is unavailable on site. Carrying the card is not a requirement for receiving services, and it is not proof of identity or benefit eligibility.
Ask iSpeakAustin@austintexas.gov about languages missing from the list. Showing a card communicates a request for an interpreter, without guaranteeing an immediate in-person interpreter in every setting. Confirm arrangements when booking. The official ATXN demonstration explains the card’s use rather than promising equivalent services from a private business.
