Choosing a California driving school: licensing, actual driving time and cancellation terms
California families should distinguish classroom Driver Education from behind-the-wheel Driver Training. DMV specifies at least six hours of professional driving practice, with no more than two hours per day. Watching another student drive does not count toward those six hours.
Check the school's DMV occupational licence before comparing total tuition, additional charges, pickup locations and cancellation or rescheduling rules. Retain contracts, receipts and course documents. DMV lists 916-229-3126 for checking an instructor's licence status; advertising and online ratings are not substitutes for that check.
Ask whether the training car has an instructor brake, an additional mirror, insurance and annual inspection, and obtain an emergency contact number for lessons. These are selection questions, not an endorsement of any school. Course certificates, instruction permits and the final driving test are separate stages. Match the official application checklist to the student's age, and do not count observation or ordinary supervised practice as professional training hours.
