Defective used cars in New York: check coverage and document repairs
New York's Attorney General explains that certain used vehicles bought or leased from in-state dealers for mainly personal use require a written warranty. Coverage depends on several conditions, including age or mileage since original delivery, a price or lease value of at least $1,500 and fewer than 100,000 miles at acquisition.
Warranty length varies with mileage, and not every component or problem is covered. Report a suspected covered defect promptly and request repair. Keep complaints, work orders, bills and correspondence, recording dates, mileage and time the vehicle cannot be used.
If reasonable repair opportunities do not resolve the problem, review the official arbitration process. Refunds have conditions and exceptions; eligibility to apply is not a successful claim.
