Optional auto service contracts: check overlap, deductibles and approval
An offer described as an extended warranty may actually be a separately purchased auto service contract. FTC guidance distinguishes that optional product from a warranty included with the vehicle. Compare its starting and ending dates with existing coverage before paying for overlapping protection.
Ask for written details of the company approving claims, deductibles, exclusions and any requirement for repair authorization. Check where work may be done and what happens if you move or sell the vehicle. A broad product name does not mean every repair or worn part is covered.
Retain maintenance receipts and the actual contract, rather than relying on a sales conversation. Verify unexpected calls or letters claiming that coverage is expiring through a known contact.
