The FTC describes fake buyers who send counterfeit payment notices and pressure sellers to ship. Others claim that they paid twice and ask for a refund of money that never arrived. Another tactic is a check for more than the asking price, followed by a request to send back the difference. A temporary bank balance does not prove that a check is genuine; the bank can later discover the fraud and recover the money.
Do not accept an overpayment check or share verification codes with a stranger. A supposed identity check involving Google Voice can instead connect someone else’s account to your phone. The FTC also advises against mobile payments from unknown buyers. For shipped transactions, read the platform’s seller protections rather than relying on a buyer’s payment message.
