USC’s Filipino American Library collection: separate digital access from physical requests
USC Special Collections holds the Filipino American Library collection, number 6235, containing materials transferred from the former Historic Filipinotown library in 2017. Its dates span 1910–2015. Subjects include Filipino American communities in Southern California, World War II veterans and immigrant cultural experiences, in English, Tagalog and Ilocano. The original library closed, so use USC’s current collection access route rather than treating its former address as an operating service point.
The finding aid separates digitized material from minimally processed material. Digital items include lantern slides, bound volumes, photographs and maps. The other group is not fully digitized or described item by item. Follow the guide’s USC Digital Library link to see available online items. Many published books and periodicals were separated from the archival collection and catalogued individually; search the main USC Libraries catalogue for those.
Physical materials are stored offsite and require advance notice. Contact specol@usc.edu or (213) 740-5900 with collection number 6235 and the box, folder or item needed, then confirm retrieval arrangements.
The guide’s description and metadata carry a CC BY 4.0 licence. That does not automatically license the photographs or manuscripts themselves. For planned publication or quotation from manuscripts, follow the department’s written-request process and separately establish any copyright-holder permission.
