加州私人買二手車：核對 90 天內排放檢驗，勿混淆四年與八年豁免
向加州私人賣家買車，若交易須做 Smog Check，車輛應在最近 90 天內通過檢驗。可向賣家索取 Vehicle Inspection Report，並從 BAR 官網查看檢驗紀錄；不要只憑口頭說「已驗車」。

For a California private-party purchase requiring a Smog Check, the vehicle should have passed within the previous 90 days. Ask the seller for the Vehicle Inspection Report and check inspection history through BAR; a verbal assurance is insufficient documentation.
Newer-model exemptions differ: gasoline, hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles four model years old or newer are exempt for ownership changes; the eight-model-year exemption applies to registration renewal. Do not transfer that renewal rule to a private sale. Diesel vehicles have separate rules. If a renewal notice specifies a STAR station, use an appropriate station. A passing certificate is sent electronically to DMV, but the owner must still complete the transfer or renewal. Keep the inspection report.
