San Jose Betsuin

San Jose Betsuin Japanese Language School: check the waitlist before a trial class
San Jose Betsuin Japanese Language School serves the San Jose Japantown community with beginner-to-intermediate Japanese and an adult class; advanced study is offered on request. Teachers use Japanese and English for kana, kanji, reading, writing and conversation. Children should be at least six or entering first grade in the fall.
The published 2026–27 year runs from September 5, 2026 to May 8, 2027, with Saturday classes from 9 a.m. to noon. It has already started. Although registration links remain available, the program page explicitly says WAITLIST. Call 408-293-9292 or email jls@sjbetsuin.org to confirm waiting-list arrangements, placement, trials and the actual classroom location before traveling.
The school advertises a free trial and explains that its focus is Japanese language; Buddhist affiliation does not require students to practice the religion. Classrooms are separate from the temple’s main hall. Tuition and available places are not verified here. The calendar lists 29 school days, so do not assume every Saturday in the date range is a class day.
