Medicare ABNs: distinguish receiving care with a submitted claim
When a provider expects Original Medicare may not pay for a service, an applicable Advance Beneficiary Notice identifies the item, estimated cost and reason. An ABN is an advance notice, not a formal Medicare denial.
The choices affect what follows. Receiving the service and requesting submission to Medicare preserves a possible appeal after a denial. Receiving it without a submitted claim provides no Medicare appeal for that claim. Declining the service avoids paying for an item not received. Ask for an explanation of the estimate and options before signing, and retain a copy rather than treating the ABN as routine paperwork.
