Used-car mileage discrepancies: compare records before reporting
An odometer reading alone does not establish how much a used vehicle has been driven. NHTSA recommends comparing the title, dashboard reading, maintenance and inspection records, service stickers and signs of wear for inconsistencies.
Tampering with a digital odometer can be difficult to recognize visually. As preparation, arrange the available dates, mileage entries and document sources in order and ask the seller to explain discrepancies. A history report supplies clues, not a guarantee that fraud is absent. Worn parts alone are not grounds for publicly accusing a particular seller.
NHTSA directs individual odometer-fraud cases to state enforcement agencies. Information about a large-scale scheme can be provided to its Vehicle Safety Hotline, 888-327-4236. Preserve advertisements, messages and transaction documents and ask the appropriate agency about submission. This guide does not replace an inspection or promise a refund or enforcement outcome.
