donateNYC: distinguish the public directory from organizational exchange
New York City's donateNYC helps residents find places to donate or buy second-hand goods. NYC311 describes categories including clothing, electronics and furniture, while each receiving organization determines what it accepts. A directory entry is not a booking for free collection.
The materials exchange is a separate service: New York City businesses, nonprofits and city agencies can post offers or requests for surplus goods at no charge. Individuals cannot post on that exchange and should use the appropriate donation-location search instead.
Before contacting a recipient, list the type, quantity and condition of the items and consider transport. Ask whether photographs or an appointment are needed. Do not leave goods outside or assume every furniture item is accepted. This is a guide to the official service, not a repost of unverified stock, a recipient commitment or a completed donation transaction.
