An annuity is an insurance contract, and products differ in when income begins, interest arrangements, risk and exit charges. California's Department of Insurance advises seniors to obtain the written contract and all deadlines before buying, without signing unfamiliar documents under sales pressure.
Seniors generally have a thirty-day free-look period after receiving the contract. Returning it through the stated process within that period provides a full refund; later cancellation may trigger substantial surrender charges.
