READ/San Diego is a free public-library service for adult reading and writing, reachable at 619-238-6603. Learners must be eighteen or older, understand some English, read or write at eighth-grade level or below and not attend school for credit. It is not a beginner spoken-English class.
Applicants need to reach the service area and commit for at least six months. One-to-one tutoring normally meets twice weekly for ninety minutes in a library or another public place, not a private home. Even when someone helps complete the learner form, staff need to speak directly with the learner.
Instruction and materials are free, but transportation and bus passes are not provided. Matching may take one to several months. Consider travel and available hours before applying.
