BBC briefing: Tehran talks, pre-election military tensions and Egyptian defensive support
The BBC’s October 26 edition of The Iran War Today reports that Iran’s president met senior Saudi, Pakistani and Turkish military and security officials in Tehran. The three countries signed a mutual-defence agreement in August. A BBC Persian reporter says details remain limited: it is unclear whether the talks mainly concern the Saudi–Houthi conflict, possible renewed attacks on Iran, or both. No security agreement is announced.
The programme also covers the Israeli defence minister’s denial of reports of a pre-election rift between the prime minister and the military. A Jerusalem correspondent examines the electoral and security context. In Washington, another correspondent uses Obama’s and Trump’s campaign remarks as background to explain the links between the Iran war, fuel prices and the US midterms. Possible further strikes remain a reported concern and subject of analysis, not an announced operation.
Egypt’s parliament approved military support for Saudi Arabia that day. The BBC reports the government’s emphasis on a defensive role and distinguishes this vote from the earlier proposal, against continuing Saudi–Houthi fighting. Approval does not mean Egypt has launched attacks on Yemen.
