Bay Area Freeway Assist: distinguish free patrol help from chargeable towing
For a non-emergency breakdown on a Bay Area freeway, call 511 from a mobile phone and say “Freeway Assist.” The operator identifies the location and appropriate help. Use 911 for crashes, injuries or dangerous situations.
The current page lists FSP and similar free assistance on weekdays from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., subject to the actual segment and service period. Help can include jump-starts, tyre changes and removal from the freeway; Caltrans handles regional bridges and tunnels.
Outside patrol availability, CHP’s rotational towing program may respond at standard rates. Give the road, direction and nearby exit, and confirm charges. Calling 511 does not entitle a driver to free towing to any destination.
