After a DIY oil change: finding a California certified used-oil collection centre
Do not pour used motor oil into a drain, onto soil or into ordinary rubbish. CalRecycle’s Certified Collection Centers search supports city, county and ZIP-code searches. Its published recycling incentive is 40 cents per gallon. Most centres accept up to five gallons at a time; contact the centre before bringing larger quantities or unusual containers. A listing is not permission to leave oil at an unattended site.
Keep used oil separate from gasoline, solvents, antifreeze and water. Contaminated oil needs guidance from the local household hazardous-waste programme rather than the ordinary certified-centre route. Confirm hours and container requirements before travelling. You can also check whether your locality offers a properly packaged curbside collection service, or call 1-800-CLEANUP for disposal directions.
