Medicare inpatient mental health: which hospital type has a 190-day lifetime limit?
Original Medicare Part A covers qualifying inpatient mental-health care. A freestanding psychiatric hospital is subject to a 190-day lifetime benefit limit; that specific limit does not apply to a psychiatric unit in a general hospital. This is not 190 days of free care: deductibles and coinsurance still depend on the applicable benefit period and length of stay.
Physician and other professional services during admission may be handled separately under Part B, generally with 20% of the approved amount payable by the patient. Private-duty nursing and a private room that is not medically necessary are not ordinary covered items. Before a planned admission, confirm hospital type, days already used and expected personal costs with the hospital and plan.
