Excelsior planning: the 2026–27 deadline has passed; review credit and residency obligations
HESC’s current page lists August 31, 2026 as the 2026–27 Excelsior deadline, which has passed as of this review. The award mainly helps eligible SUNY and CUNY students with tuition remaining after specified other aid, rather than all housing and living costs. Income and other eligibility rules still apply.
Future applicants and recipients should review the usual twelve-credit semester and thirty-credit annual requirements, continuous enrollment and exceptions. Recipients also make a New York residency commitment and must work in-state if employed; unmet conditions can turn the award into a loan. Confirm the individual requirements with HESC before relying on the benefit.
