Reporting an abandoned vehicle in NYC: plates and property location matter
NYC 311 provides separate reporting paths for suspected abandoned vehicles. Record the exact location and condition, and distinguish public property from private land; a shared driveway is not necessarily public property.
The city directs public-property cases with at least one fixed metal or temporary paper plate, left for at least 48 hours, to police. Unplated vehicles are assessed against Sanitation's derelict-vehicle criteria. Cases outside those criteria may go to the precinct; reporting does not guarantee immediate towing.
Private property has a separate owner-request process. Do not move the vehicle or remove items yourself. Immediate danger requires an emergency response rather than an ordinary service request.
Location: New York City, New York. Checked: October 4, 2026 (US Pacific time). Evergreen guide; original publication date not provided.
Photo context: Abandoned vehicle beside Marine Park Salt Marsh Nature Trail, NYC, April 2020; historical photo, not a current service report.
