California specialty plates: first orders differ from transfers and retention
California DMV’s online specialty-plate ordering service is for original requests. Gifts, renewals, retention, replacement, conversion and transfers use form REG 17. Placing another order is not the same process as retaining an existing plate.
Have the vehicle registration card ready and check the mailing address in DMV’s records. After an address update, DMV asks applicants to allow 72 hours before ordering. Plates take additional processing time, so use the page’s current processing-time link. Check the plate charge and payment fee before paying; selecting a plate is not the same as receiving it.
Location: California. Checked: October 4, 2026 (US Pacific time). Evergreen guide; original publication date not provided.
Photo context: California personalized plate photographed in 2018; an example of the format, not a plate offered for sale or an available combination.
