English California licence renewal at seventy-plus: follow the notice, not a blanket test assumption California DMV advises drivers aged seventy or older to check their renewal notice before assuming a knowledge test is required. Age alone does not mean every renewal needs a written test. Many steps can begin online, including the application and an eligible eLearning selection when testing is required. For eligible applicants, eLearning is an open-book course with no failing result. Finishing it does not finish the entire renewal. The official instructions still require an office visit to complete the application and vision check, and advise allowing one business day for payment to appear on the record. Update a changed address first; DMV recommends doing so at least three days before renewal. Applicants choosing REAL ID should also prepare the required original documents. Age does not replace an individual driving or medical assessment, and additional examination or restriction notices must be followed. This preparation guide guarantees no test exemption, vision result or particular driving privilege.
