OPM requires entitlement to an immediate retirement annuity and continuous FEHB coverage for the five service years before the annuity begins, or since the first opportunity to enroll when that period is shorter. Coverage as a family member under FEHB can count. Some TRICARE coverage can also count toward the duration requirement, but FEHB enrollment is still required on the retirement date. Ask the employing office to verify actual coverage dates, family coverage and retirement arrangements instead of relying on a simple personal calculation. Dental and vision coverage through FEDVIP follows different continuation rules and has no equivalent five-year requirement. Limited FEHB exceptions require the applicable determination; requesting one does not guarantee a waiver. Retain insurance and personnel notices before leaving, and confirm retirement premiums and coverage handling before changing other insurance.
