The Department of Insurance says a new policy with the same or fewer benefits can be purchased during that period without medical screening or a new waiting period. This is not a general first-enrollment rule for everyone who lacks Medigap. Locate the current plan letter, benefits and premium. Ask a licensed agent or insurer whether the replacement meets the same-or-lesser-benefits requirement. A cheaper price does not prove equivalent coverage, and the rule does not guarantee an upgrade. Confirm acceptance, the effective date and termination arrangements before replacing existing coverage. Medicare does not send official sales representatives to solicit Medigap business.
