English California mobile driver identification: a companion to your physical card California's mobile Driver's License, or mDL, is optional digital identification that does not replace a physical driving license or ID card. DMV provides instructions for CA DMV Wallet and other supported wallets. Downloading and using the mDL itself is free. Choose the instructions for your phone's wallet and check device requirements and enrollment steps. Setup generally involves photographing a valid physical card and completing identity verification. Wallet features and accepted uses differ, so one supported function should not be assumed available on every device. Only participating airport checkpoints and certain organizations accept digital identification; check the requirements for your journey or transaction. DMV says to continue carrying the physical card, including when law enforcement requests identification. This guide identifies official routes and limitations without performing verification. Keep card photographs, login information and verification codes out of public comments.
