English BBC analysis: Lula’s comeback and Brazil’s domestic and foreign challenges This Brazil-focused edition of the BBC Global News Podcast, hosted by Pete Ross, combines reporting and analysis of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s comeback from a first-round deficit to defeat Flávio Bolsonaro in Sunday’s runoff. Flávio, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, refuses to concede and seeks annulment. His demand does not mean the result has been annulled. The programme explains that both campaigns had sought longer voting hours because of transport and weather problems. BBC reporter Mimi Swaby discusses Flávio’s subsequent objections and the electoral judiciary’s expressed confidence in the process. This is attributed analysis of the dispute, not a legal ruling by this article. BBC Brazil correspondent Daniel Gallas examines uncertainty in relations with Washington, Lula’s sovereignty message, and the strength of the right in Congress and regional politics. He discusses organized social-media mobilization alongside government measures as factors in Lula’s turnaround. These are BBC assessments of the victory and the obstacles ahead, rather than guarantees about subsequent foreign policy or governing outcomes.
