Santa Monica College

KOREAN 9(Korean Civilization)

English
Korean credit courses at Santa Monica College: conversation versus Korean civilization

When choosing Korean-related credit courses at Santa Monica College, distinguish speaking practice from cultural and literary study. The current official catalog lists KOREAN 8, Conversational Korean, as a two-unit course requiring KOREAN 2. It develops natural spoken usage, vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. Teaching is in Korean except where the professor determines that language difficulties require otherwise.

KOREAN 9, Korean Civilization, is a three-unit introduction to Korean civilization and literature. It covers philosophical, religious and artistic dimensions alongside social, political and cultural context. No prior knowledge of Korean language, literature or culture is required, and all materials are in English. It should not be confused with a Korean conversation class.

A catalog listing does not establish that a class runs this term or has available places. Ask the Modern Languages and Cultures department about offerings, prerequisite recognition, fees and registration. Administrative assistant Travis Grant prefers email at grant_travis@smc.edu; the telephone number is 310-434-4248. The college address is 1900 Pico Boulevard, Santa Monica, CA 90405. This is a guide to credit-course selection, separate from Emeritus community-learning enrollment.
