English Before traveling abroad with Medicare: overseas coverage is usually limited Medicare generally does not pay for care outside the United States. Limited exceptions include qualifying nearer foreign hospitals and emergencies during a properly direct journey through Canada between Alaska and another state. A Medicare card does not make all foreign hospital or cruise-ship care covered. Medicare drug plans also do not pay for prescriptions purchased abroad. Before departure, ask the relevant plan and Medigap insurer about foreign-emergency terms, and check whether any travel policy actually includes medical coverage rather than only trip cancellation.
